Allan Hancock College Foundation
Awards $200,000 In Scholarship Funds
The Allan Hancock College Foundation awarded 253 scholarships totaling $200,720 to 181 top students on Thursday, May 27. Nearly 1,000 students, relatives, friends, donors and community members attended the college’s 35th annual scholarship ceremony at the Allan Hancock College Sports Pavilion. Scholarships ranging in amounts up to $10,000 were awarded to students from all parts of the Central Coast, from Solvang to the Five Cities area.
In keeping with tradition, the Allan Hancock College Associated Student Body Government hosted the evening’s event.
The theme for the annual scholarship event was “Community Supporting Community.”
A total of 130 donors from the community awarded scholarships to both returning and transferring students through the Allan Hancock College Foundation scholarship program.
The top scholarship winner was Jennifer Abby Oehler of Santa Maria, who received the prestigious $5,000 Marian Hancock Scholarship. The scholarship is named for Marian Hancock, the wife of Capt. G. Allan Hancock, for whom the college is named. During her life, Mrs. Hancock was a staunch supporter of the college and the scholarship program.

Oehler (pictured left with Dr. Ann Foxworthy) is a 33-year-old reentry student, graduating with an A.A. degree in biology. Her goal is to earn a Ph.D. in biological research. She has been accepted at UCSB and will transfer in the fall. In her scholarship application she explained that she found her inspiration in her first semester at Allan Hancock College in a marine biology course taught by Tammy Brannon. She wrote, “It was an experience that sparked an interest in me stronger than I have ever known. Now I find myself riveted by scientific learning…(and) while I have enjoyed all of my classes, and been inspired by many of them, my biology classes have set a career course for me that I know will enlarge my life and enable me to make an impact.” She added that “wherever I go I will fondly remember Hancock as my springboard to great things.”

A full-time student, Oehler works three jobs, including tutoring on campus. Last summer she was chosen to participate in a prestigious science internship at UCSB where she performed lab work as part of the University’s Nanosystem Science, Engineering and Technology program.
A member of the Dean’s List every semester at Hancock, Oehler was a founding member of the campus’ Math, Chemistry and Life Science Club, formed as a way to bring together other motivated students who share similar interests.

Another featured scholarship winner was Santa Maria resident Samantha Howell (pictured right with Dr. Ann Foxworthy).  She was awarded the $10,000 O’Neill Law Enforcement Scholarship. The award is disbursed over two years. Edwin O’Neill was a pioneer in methods of scientific detection in law enforcement in the 1930s and worked for many years at the crime detection laboratory at Northwestern University and later at the Chicago Police Department. O’Neill, a longtime resident of Santa Maria who passed away in 1993, selected Allan Hancock College to continue his legacy of excellence in law enforcement. Howell will transfer to CSU Fresno with a goal of obtaining a bachelor’s degree to work as a forensic chemist for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
